No space left in space
14 November 2006
The great race to take a holiday in space has come to an end after the Russian Space Agency ran out of tickets.
Despite costing tens of millions of pounds, the tickets proved very popular among travellers with a sense of adventure and now the Russian's are looking at developing cheaper alternatives.
The aim is to get more people into space as demand for the experience continues to grow.
'We have a waiting list for those wishing to fly to the ISS [International Space Station]. All the seats have been booked up until 2009,' head of the Russian Space Agency, Anatoly Perminov, told daily newspaper Troud.
In a bid to allow as many people as possible to experience space, Russian firm Miassishchev is said to be developing a sub-orbital vessel.
The hope is that this would offer tourists a cheaper and shorter trip than the one currently on offer.
'Tourists would not be able to orbit around the earth but could stay in space for several minutes,' Mr Perminov said about the proposals.
