Karnataka's bird sanctuaries
14 November 2006
Tourists are being attracted to Karnataka in India by the development of bird sanctuaries in the state.
Officials want to establish the sanctuaries so as to educate visitors about the culture of the region and the first should be up and running by December, reports the New Indpress.
The Karnataka State Tourism Department is keen to have sanctuaries in place which, unlike many others in the country, allow visitors to approach birds in their nests.
It is hoped that by using the sanctuaries to educate visitors about the birds and their habits, there will be fewer cases of wild birds being disrupted.
Problems have been occurring with wild birds being disturbed in their nests, leading to unguarded eggs being eaten by predators.
There have also been a number of incidents where tourists have approached large congregations of migratory birds something that the tourism department warns against doing.
