China's tourism boom
14 November 2006
China has seen extremely positive growth in the number of foreign visitors making the journey to the country.
Official statistics, released by the China National Tourism Administration, show that 92.2m overseas tourists passed through during the first nine months of 2006.
That signals a rise of 2.86% compared to the same period last year and is yet more confirmation that China is rapidly becoming one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
Revenue generated from foreign visitors reached $23.3 billion (£12.2 billion) up until September, a growth of 5.63% compared to 2005.
September itself saw visitor numbers rise considerably, with 10.4m foreign tourists making the trip, a rise of 5.56% compared to September 2005.
South Korea provided the majority of foreign visitors to the country, with 334,169 visiting during September.
Visitors from Japan, Russia and the US also made up large numbers of the total figure.
China is now the fourth most popular international tourist destination, with the World Tourism Organisation predicting the country will be number one by 2020.
