Northern Ireland's tourism boost
15 November 2006
Tourism in Northern Ireland has been given a boost after it was named as one of the "must-see" places of 2007.
The country was recognised by travel guide The Lonely Planet as it released its annual Blue List, a section dedicated to the best places to take a holiday.
It is great news for the country after years of political unrest and violence, and the country was given a further boost as its capital Belfast was named as one of the top ten "cities on the rise".
'I love the city, its grittiness, its resilience and its beauty and I love how Belfast people turn every social interaction into an excuse for a party,' said Lonely Planet co-founder Maureen Wheeler.
'The landscape of Northern Ireland is astonishingly beautiful, the people are warm and genuine, and yet it is still relatively undiscovered which makes it the perfect destination.'
Visiting countries which were previously not seen as tourist destinations due to violence or other factors is proving to be a popular choice among many travellers today.
Beirut also features highly in the Blue List, as do Gabon and Xinjiang in China.
