Jammu, Kashmir redevelopment
16 November 2006

Jammu and Kashmir could soon benefit from a vast redevelopment of its infrastructure.

The region's chief minister, Azad, has called for greater investment and a reassessment of the current set up, reports the New Kerala.

'J-K [Jammu and Kashmir] has great potential for pilgrim and highway tourism due to its rich cult of saints and sages besides picturesque scenery along highways,' he said during a speech.

'I call for speedy development of infrastructure in the state.'

Mr Azad has expressed a keen interest in developing and promoting pilgrim tourism in the region in a bid to boost the local economy.

He also called for the promotion of integrated tourist circuits, which he believes will attract business to the region.

'Completion of integrated tourist circuits with modern facilities would lure domestic and international tourists,' he said.

'We have great potential to showcase new and chaste tourist places for large-scale tourist activity to attract huge tourist flow.

'The state, being an abode of great saints and sufis, possesses vast potential for pilgrim tourism,' he added.
