Ejected from flight for smelling
17 November 2006

A man who was ejected from a flight for smelling badly has had his compensation claim rejected.

A German court ruled that the airline was within its rights to remove the man from the plane after a fellow passenger complained, reports Reuters.

The Dusseldorf court heard how the unnamed man was taken to one side and asked to leave the flight because the female passenger he was sitting next to could not stand his odour.

'The stewardess took him to one side and asked him if he could put on a fresh shirt, but they were all in the hold,' said a court spokesman said. 'So then he was asked to leave the plane - about two minutes before take off.'

The man, a corporate lawyer, and his wife were on a flight from Hawaii via Los Angeles and missed their connecting flight to Germany due to the delay.

'The man said he couldn't help sweating after carrying three suitcases in 29 degrees [Celsius] of heat and sitting in the airport for two hours with no air conditioning,' added the court spokesman.

'But the court said the airline's terms and conditions made clear they could bar passengers because of their smell.'
