Zambia seeks World Cup tourism
20 November 2006

Tourism officials in Zambia are calling upon the hospitality industry to improve standards and infrastructure ahead of the 2010 football World Cup.

The competition is being held in neighbouring South Africa, but authorities in the country are hopeful that Zambia will see a rise in visitor numbers before and during the tournament, reports the Times of Zambia.

The Hotel and Catering Association of Zamabia's (HCAZ's) president, Sylvia Eneke, has called for more work to be done in key areas such as Lusaka, Livingstone and Copperbelt.

'Zambian hotels need to remain competitive and we can not afford to be more expensive than other destinations in the region,' said Ms Eneke.

'We need to work towards reducing room rates so that we can attract more tourists.'

The HCAZ president was speaking at the Zambia Institute of Marketing's annual conference, at which she put forward a paper entitled Challenges and Opportunities for the 2010 World Cup.

Ms Eneke went on to call for government to put in place a four-year suspension on taxes that affect growth in the hospitality sector.
