Kenya's wonder of the world
20 November 2006

Kenyan tourism has received a boost after the annual wildebeest migration was named as one of the seven new Wonders of the World.

The Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) is said to be delighted with the award which was made by American television network ABC.

Although the award does not put the migration on the official Seven Wonders of the World list, it has given Kenya some much needed attention and the KTB plans to exploit it to its fullest.

It is now expected that Kenya will see visitor numbers boom in the coming 12 months, after a period of quiet following travel advisories issued by the governments of the US and the UK.

Kenya's tourism industry is now in overdrive to promote the country as a great tourist destination, with the nation's wildlife top of the advertising agenda.

'We have the best wildlife experience in the world,' sales and marketing director of Serena Hotels, Peter Mbogua, told the Daily Nation.

'South Africa has its own but ours is unique and the only one of its kind. This is an important development but we need to be careful so as not to over-develop the Maasai Mara.'

Other attractions which were recognised by ABC include Tibet's Potala Palace, Old Jerusalem City, the polar ice caps and the underwater Hawaiian Island's Monument.
