Iceberg tourism
20 November 2006

A helicopter pilot in New Zealand is offering tourists an adrenaline-fuelled trip to previously undiscovered icebergs.

Andrew Reid, operations manager at Christchurch Helicopters, has been taking tourists to Dunedin and then out to sea in order to land on an iceberg, reports website stuff.co.nz.

Mr Reid says that during the flight, the helicopter loses radio contact but he remains in touch with people on land via a satellite phone.

The pilot describes the journey as 'pretty full-on' and says landing on the icebergs is 'an alien experience'.

Once landed, Mr Reid remains inside the helicopter 'to make sure it stayed there', while his passengers are free to walk around.

They are provided with home-made crampons, which consist of screws in the soles of their shoes, and given free reign of the berg they are on.

The icebergs are described as 'creaky and groaning' and are expected to melt away soon as they drift northwards.
