Buddhist tourism drive
20 November 2006
Sri Lanka says it is to team up with Nepal and India in a bid to promote Buddhist tourism on a global scale.
The country's minister of tourism, Anura Bandaranaike, has revealed that after attending the World Travel market in London this month, she discovered there is a big market to be exploited.
He told Sri Lankan daily the Sunday Observer that people from China, Japan and many European countries would be interested.
Mr Bandaranaike has revealed that he has already met with officials in Nepal and India to discuss how best to go about promoting Buddhist tourism.
He says 'excellent air links' between the countries will help to establish a market, in which all three nations are simultaneously promoted.
In addition, Mr Bandaranaike told the newspaper that discussions had taken place concerning other aspects of tourism, in particular how to promote Sri Lanka as a safe destination.
'Unlike in countries such as Bali and Egypt tourists have not been targeted in violent incidents ever in Sri Lanka and this is a plus point for tourism,' he said.
