UFTAA supports responsible tourism day
21 November 2006
A meeting held by the United Federation of Travel Agents' Association (UFTAA) has unanimously voted in favour of establishing a World Responsible Tourism Day.
The initiative, which is the brainchild of the United Nations World Travel Organisation (UNWTO), was launched at the World Travel Market in London, reports website Travel Daily News.
The UFTAA has now given its endorsement to the project during a meeting in Morocco, saying it fits in with the group's commitment to social responsibility in tourism.
Chairman of the UFTAA, Joe Borg Olivier, used the announcement of the group's support for the responsible tourism day to highlight work that has been done by the UFTAA in the past.
He reminded delegates that the group was one of the initiators in the now globally recognised campaign to put a stop to abuse against children in the tourism industry.
Mr Borg went on to outline that the entire industry needs to work together to ensure responsible tourism becomes commonplace among travellers and industry workers around the world.
