Hawaii's culture drive
21 November 2006
Tourist executives in Hawaii yesterday heard calls from a local industry leader for efforts to be made to restore and regenerate traditional Hawaiian culture, by showcasing it in the islands' many hotels restaurants and shops.
Speaking at the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau's annual lunch yesterday, Douglas Kahikina Chang, general manager of the Hotel Hana-Maui, said that the tourist industry must pay greater respect to its host island culture.
Mr Chang, who is the first island native to lead the Hawaiian Tourism Authority (HTA), said that local residents of the Hawaiian islands should benefit from greater resources channelled from tourism into sustaining their unique culture.
The HTA has committed $2m (£1m) in the last two years to assist cultural programmes such as the Aloha Festival, and hula events in the Hawaiian Islands.
The authority will also commit $750,000 (£395,000) to various groups working to perpetuate Hawaiian culture.
An additional $3m (£1.6m) will be set aside to identify and rectify problems with Hawaii's natural resources, which he described as "our jewels", but which too often fall into a state of disrepair.
