Regional Australia in brochure battle
22 November 2006
Tourism officials in regional parts of Australia have been left fuming after their brochures were removed from a major visitor information centre.
Tourism New South Wales and the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority have taken the decision to remove regional brochures from the Rocks and Darling Harbour Visitor Information Centres.
The move has left local tourist operators seething, as they say they need the exposure in order to attract visitors.
'We all operate as level one visitor information centres under accreditation guidelines and one of those guidelines is that we have an obligation to promote the state of NSW [New South Wales]," Val Schaefer, tourism manager at Greater Taree City Council, told ABC News.
'We have an obligation to promote all the areas, both city and regional areas in NSW. So we feel that it's very Sydney-centric for them to only be displaying Sydney and surround guides and not to be giving us that outlet anymore.'
Ms Schaefer says the move is particularly hard to take as it comes at a tough time for domestic tourism in the region.
