China expects tourism explosion
22 November 2006
China is expecting to generate a record amount of money through tourism, according to the latest forecasts.
The China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) says it anticipates seeing $156.5 billion of revenue being created in the tourism industry by 2010, reports the People's Daily.
Liu Khezi, a senior official at the CNTA, has made the prediction after seeing visitor numbers jump in the last year.
Official statistics show that 36.69m foreign tourists spent one night or more in China in the last year, signalling an increase of 5.4% compared to the same period one year ago.
This number is expected to increase again, to 68.8m by 2010, with the revenue generated by visitors also set to rise.
The country has already seen year-on-year tourism revenue grow quickly, with $97.8 billion pouring into the country last year, an increase of 12.4% compared to one year ago.
Chinese tourism officials are also expecting a huge influx of tourists before and during the Olympic Games, which are being held in Beijing in 2010.
Following the games, it is anticipated that the global exposure the country will receive will lead to visitor numbers continuing to grow.
