South Africa's Big Hole
24 November 2006
Travellers looking for something different from a holiday in South Africa now have another major attraction to visit.
The Big Hole is a new tourist attraction, but is steeped in history as deep as it is itself, reports Mining Weekly.
Located in Kimberley, the attraction is in fact a disused diamond mine and after much renovation and investment has been rebranded.
Described as a historically-themed leisure and commercial retail trading area, the Big Hole tells the story of diamonds.
It looks back at how they were mined in the region which is generally considered to be the birthplace of modern diamond mining.
'It is an asset in our home city, where we continue to mine one and a half million carats a year, which in time will form the hub in a wheel of tourism initiatives branching out all over the Northern Cape,' said David Noko of De Beers Consolidated Mines.
Visitors to the Big Hole will be able to walk along a 90-metre viewing platform, offering spectacular views into the hole.
There is also an audio-visual theatre, an underground mining experience and a display of real diamonds.
