New Zealand's ice attraction
27 November 2006
Extreme sports fans and thrill-seekers the world over are expected to flock to New Zealand upon the opening of an ice-climbing wall.
The $6.5m (£2.25m) glacier centre is being built on the South Island's west coast, and tourism officials are hopeful that the attraction will persuade more people to take their holiday in New Zealand.
Workers have made real progress in creating what will be only the fifth indoor ice wall in the world, while another attraction at the site is also reaching completion.
A walk-through glacier experience is being designed and built by 3-D Creative, the company that worked on the Lord of the Rings films.
The attraction's management is expecting to welcome around 100,000 tourists every year, with around 10,000 attending to climb the wall.
'Most income will come from the walk-through exhibit, but the real interest is in the ice-climbing wall,' general manager Steve Henery told website Stuff.co.nz.
