Japan's Emperor opens his gardens
29 November 2006
A select few people in Japan will be granted access to an area previously unseen by the public, with the launch of a competition.
The Fukiage Gardens, which house the Imperial Residence, will be opened up for the first time, offering a limited number of people a chance to see inside, reports Asahi.
Fukiage Gardens covers a 25-hectare area and recently was found to be home to around 5,000 species of plants, animals and birds.
The Imperial Household Agency says it is in light of this discovery, made by the National Science Museum, that Emperor Akihito decided to open the gates.
In total, six guided tours will take place, with around 200 people being allowed to enter the gardens.
Travellers wishing to catch a glimpse inside the Fukiage Gardens will have their work cut out however, with a competition being launched and interest in the prize is expected to be very high.
