Award for London's Fan Museum
29 November 2006
A London museum, which is dedicated to fans, has been handed a prestigious tourism award.
The aptly named Fan Museum in Greenwich town centre has been named Small Visitor Attraction of the Year.
At a ceremony held in London, the museum was commended for its creativity and dedicated staff and was labelled as one of London's hidden gems.
The museum, which is in Crooms Hill, is an ideal attraction for someone enjoying a city break in London and houses a vast collection of antique fans.
Laying claim to being the only museum in the world which is dedicated entirely to fans, the museum has more than 3,500 items on display, each presented in its historical, social and economic context.
'We are very proud and very pleased that the work we are doing has been recognised,' Alex Moskalenko from the Fan Museum told website icSouthLondon.co.uk.
'We do our very best to make sure visitors have a pleasant and informative experience when they come here.
"It's great to hear that our hard work has resulted in some recognition,' she added.
It is not the first time that the museum has been recognised. When it opened in 1991, it received awards from the National Art Collections Fund and the English Tourist Board for 'outstanding contributions to the Arts and to tourism'.
