New resort in Vietnam
30 November 2006

A new beach resort, Mom Da Chim, has opened in the Binh Thuan province of Vietnam.

The resort, which will span ten hectares, encompasses three hectares of forest land bordering the sea.

It will cost £3.8 million to build, bringing a substantial tourist income to the relatively undeveloped town of Lagi.

The vice chairman of the province's local people's committee, Nguyen Van Thu, spoke on Saturday of his optimism about how the development would enhance the region.

The only place more popular with tourists in the province is Mui Ne, he said.

The area is famed for its unspoilt stretches of beach, with high grasses and flocks of varied species of sea-bird.

The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) recently awarded Vietnam the award for 2006 Country of the Year, which hails its achievement in possessing the fastest-growing economy in south-east Asia and making a successful transition to a market economy.

Vietnam has invested the equivalent of £68 billion in its tourist industry over the last five years, according to Nhan Dan paper.
