Ancient Indian mosque to be restored
07 December 2006

Work has begun on restoring an ancient mosque in Srinagar, India.

The 14th century structure has been a dominant feature in the city for hundreds of years and is being restored as part of a tourism drive.

Jammu and Kashmir governments are hoping that they can increase the number of people taking a holiday in India by improving the region's historical and cultural sites.

The Aali Masjid mosque is regularly used for Eid prayers and officials have confirmed that Rs 1.2 crore has been put aside for construction work.

It was decided two years ago that work would begin on restoring the mosque as officials became concerned about its condition.

During the earthquake of 2005 the Aali Masjid suffered severe damage, forcing authorities to bring restoration work forward.

The building has been closed to the public since the early 1990s due to safety fears.
