KLM's Bluetooth initiative
08 December 2006

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) is trialling a new messaging service to its passengers at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

The airline plans to send messages to its passengers within the airport using Bluetooth technology.

Bluetooth works by wirelessly transmitting information which can be picked up by gadgets such as mobile phones and laptops.

When a customer passes within range of the transmitter he or she will receive the message sent by KLM.

Passengers will be required to activate their Bluetooth device if they want to receive messages from the airline, meaning those that do not will remain unaffected.

At present, customers are receiving messages which encourage them to check in online so as to reduce the time spent waiting in a queue.

The message reads: 'Check in online, avoid queues.'

Although the trial is in its infancy, KLM hopes that in the future, passengers will be able to receive detailed communications from the airline before boarding their flight.
