Durban International to be renamed?
08 December 2006

Durban International airport may be about to be renamed if a local council gets its way.

The smallest of South Africa's three major international airports, Durban may be renamed Moses Mabhida International airport.

Mr Mabhida was the former general secretary of the SA Communist party before he died in 1986.

A decision is expected to be reached by the end of January next year, but not everyone is in support of the idea, reports the Mercury.

Opposition parties claim an official hearing should not be taking place because the idea was not put forward at a recent executive council meeting.

Politics aside, there are other reservations among some over the renaming.

Plans are already in place to decommission the airport in 2009 because the King Shaka International airport is due to open nearby.

This has led some people to ask if it is worth renaming Durban airport for just a few years.

"I don't think it is much of an honour [to Moses Mabhida] if you are going to put his name on an airport that could be demolished in three years' time," said Democratic Alliance councillor John Steenhuizen.
