12 December 2006

Legendary footballer Zinedine Zidane has been enjoying a holiday in Algeria the country where his parents were born.

The French World Cup and European Championship winner arrived in the country on 11 December and was greeted by hordes of adoring fans.

Zidane stopped to speak with some of those who had turned out before beginning a tour of the some of the country's towns with which he is most acquainted.

His first stop was Boumerdes, which was affected by an earthquake and received aid through a project to build new schools and training centres that Zidane established.

The 34-year-old, who retired after the World Cup in Germany in 2006, also has plans to visit Aguemoune which is where his parents were raised.

Zidane, or Zizou as he is affectionately known by players and fans, is regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation and the star has always been keen to get to know more about his roots.

'My family are very proud of me, but I am very proud of them and where they come from,' he said. 'It is a special place and my roots there are important to me.'
