Shakira launches child fund
13 December 2006

Singing sensation Shakira is currently in Panama City with fellow Columbian Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

The Hips Don't Lie singer is working with Marquez, an author, to launch a child poverty foundation.

Named America Latina en Accion Solidaria (Latin America in Solidarity Action), the foundation's Spanish name has the acronym Alas, which translates as wings.

The aim is to help tackle the poverty which kills 350,000 children in the region every year.

'We all have to do our part to fight against inequality,' Shakira said in a statement, while Marquez added: 'Latin America has some devastating statistics.'

In addition to the two Columbian stars, the likes of Ricky Martin, Juanes, Alejandro Sanz and Miguel Bose are also involved in the project.
