Passengers passing through Liverpool John Lennon airport in England could be forced to pay a £2 security tax.

Airport officials are said to be considering a scheme which would see passengers paying to cover the hub's security costs.

The plans include installing a series of turnstiles which people will be required to put £2 into in order to pass into the main airport area.

Liverpool airport, like all major UK hubs, had to increase security in August due to the uncovering of an alleged terrorist plot.

'The security requirements have apparently been relaxed - but you would not feel that here,' the airport's managing director Neil Pakey told BBC Radio Merseyside.

'The insurance costs in particular have been escalating massively - our costs have gone up on security from about £2m to £5m.'

It is believed that the scheme would be the first of its kind at a UK airport and is being considered alongside other ideas which aim to help the hub cover its costs.
