Malaysia has a bathroom cleanup
20 December 2006

The Malaysian government yesterday announced that is would be installing a number of hi-tech public toilets ahead of a major tourism push.

Next year will be 2007 Visit Malaysia Year in the country, which hopes to attract around 20m visitors.

The government intends to improve the poor bathroom conditions encountered by many tourists by bringing in 23, state of the art, self-cleaning toilets to the capital Kuala Lumpur, according to the city's mayor.

After every user, each toilet will have its seat and bowl washed, scrubbed and dried, with an even more thorough process taken place after every five flushes, reports Reuters.

'There should be more campaigns to promote awareness on the benefits of clean and healthy toilets,' Najib Razak, the country's deputy prime minister said when unveiling the new 'national loo culture'.

Many tourists have claimed in the past that the country's toilets are often dirty and lack items such as paper and soap.
