UK flight chaos
21 December 2006
Passengers travelling to and from UK airports are experiencing severe delays and cancellations due to a heavy fog which has descended on the country.
All domestic flights to and from Heathrow airport have been cancelled today (21 December), while hundreds were prevented from taking off and landing the day before.
In addition to the domestic schedule, flights involving other European destinations are also badly affected, with Brussels and Paris flights having already been cancelled.
Thousands of passengers are stranded at Heathrow, with temporary shelters erected to cope with the build up.
The dense fog has also led to delays on other international flights, with landing and take-off rates halved.
Other airports in England have also been affected, with Norwich and Coventry both experiencing cancellations.
British Airways has suffered the most as a result of the poor weather and released this statement to passengers: 'British Airways has so far cancelled about 180 short-haul and domestic flights to and from London Heathrow today, out of a normal daily total of 400 short-haul flights.
'Customers are urged to continually check ba.com for the latest news or contact British Airways on 0800 727 800 to see if their flight is still operating.
'This situation is beyond British Airways' control and is affecting all airlines operating at London Heathrow,' said the airline.
It is unclear how long the weather will continue to affect flights in the UK, but weather forecasters predict the fog will remain for the next 48 hours.
