Human zoo
10 January 2007

A group of humans, who are willingly being kept in captivity, are proving to be a hit among tourists in Australia.

A number of people have volunteered to be kept in a cage at a zoo in Adelaide, with physiologists watching them to see how conditions for captive apes can be improved.

Those taking part are required to endure soaring temperatures and little more than a few bananas for nourishment.

'They're completely mad,' one visitor told Reuters, while another complained: 'It's not as exciting as the animals actually, they're not really doing very much.'

Tourists continue to flock to the zoo to see the humans however, and their antics can be monitored online.

Cameras have been set up to film every move made by the captive people and viewers can vote for their favourite person through text messages.

The person who receives the most votes will be named as the super human of the group and will be chosen to represent the zoo.

The humans have been warned that there is some behaviour which is unacceptable while in the cage, including nudity and rude behaviour, with officials saying that the use of tranquilizer darts has not be ruled out.
