Bollywood couple engaged in Mumbai
15 January 2007
Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai has become engaged to actor Abhishek Bachchan, with whom the former Miss World has appeared in a string of hit movies including her latest offering, Guru.
The couple's romantic attachment became a topic for hot debate after they were seen together at a Hindu temple in November.
Ms Rai rose to global stardom after an appearance on the cover of Time magazine in 2003 tipping her as Bollywood's pre-eminent star.
The pair, who could be dubbed Bollywood's Brangelina, have not yet set a date for the wedding, it seems.
But Ms Rai, 33, has invited her adoring public to participate in her joy on her special day.
'It'll be a joyous occasion for me and one I'd like to share with everyone,' she told Indian media.
Mumbai's attractions for the romantically-inclined visitor include the lovely early 18th century tomb of Sufi saint Hazrath Haji Ali, and the majestic Gateway to India, built in 1927 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary.
Film lovers will also relish the opportunity to spot immaculately turned-out stars on the red carpet in the city, heart of the Bollywood movie industry.
