Belize boasts whale sharks
15 January 2007

Mammoth whale sharks measuring up to 65 feet in length emerge each spring from the depths of the Caribbean Sea to visit Placencia in Belize.

These 'magnificent creatures' invite visitors to swim alongside them by diving or snorkelling, says Belize's director of tourism Tracy Panton, who offers tourists 'the unique opportunity to get up close to the curious whale sharks'.

The gentle creatures are marked out by their white, spotted backs and two dorsal fins and come to Belize's Gladden Spit Marine Reserve between March and June to feast on the cubera snapper which spawn in these waters.

Visitors stand their strongest chance of catching a glimpse of the docile fish by embarking on their encounter expedition during a full moon phase of the lunar cycle, when the snapper swarm.

Belize is just two hours by air from the United States and also boasts over 600 sites featuring Maya relics, including temples, ruins and jade carvings dating back to 1000BC.
