Imports warning
19 January 2007
Travellers are being warned that they must not bring illegal objects home with them following a holiday.
Many holidaymakers bring objects back through customs without realising that they are illegal and are disappointed when the items are removed.
In a bid to drive home the message that these products will be confiscated if found, customs officers n Belfast are holding an exhibition of seized objects.
Among the items on display at the Holiday World Exhibition at King's Hall in the city are a turtle shell, snake skins, ivory jewellery and a bear's head.
"We want to ensure that holidaymakers do not waste their money on souvenirs that may be taken off them when they get back home, so think before you buy," said Maggie Eyden, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs' head of detection in Northern Ireland.
Limits on items brought into a country exist throughout Europe, with almost all European Union (EU) countries banning the importing of meat and milk.
A large number of animals and plants are not allowed to be brought into the EU, while restrictions are in place on drugs, medicines, weapons, pornography and explosive material.
