Captain: 'Passengers have won Oscar'
24 January 2007
Passengers on a flight between New York and California broke into a round of applause when the captain announced that two of them had been nominated for an Oscar.
The pilot of the American Airways flight revealed over the intercom that Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing had been nominated for their documentary Jesus Camp.
Passengers were delighted when they heard the pilot say: 'The women in row 23 just got nominated for an Academy Award.'
Grady and Ewing co-produced Jesus Camp, which looks at a religious summer camp for children, and had asked the captain to keep an eye out for the nominations.
'We brought a note to the captain asking him to check when the nominations were announced,' said Grady.
'The captain announced an hour later that he had really good news Everyone applauded. They brought us champagne. It was something,' she added.
The film has been entered in the documentary category and Grady described the nomination as 'amazing'.
