Increased pet passenger numbers
26 January 2007
More travellers are taking their pets on holiday with them, as airlines and hotels make the practice much easier than in the past.
It has often been the case that holidaymakers are forced to make special arrangements for their pets, either to have someone look after them while the owners go away, or to find a hotel that will allow pets to stay.
However, times are changing and a large number of resorts will allow for animals to stay without too much of a fuss.
There are even special activities and tours which have been established to allow dogs and other pets join in.
'We know beaches where you can't even carry your dog in your arms on the boardwalk,' dog-owner Linda Lombardi told MSNBC.
'I don't know if they have roving bands of people throwing their Chihuahuas at people or what.'
In response to the growing trend of taking animals on holiday, a website has been established, telling tourists where their pets will and will not be welcome.
Those who do not own pets may wonder why a holidaymaker would want to take an animal on a trip with them, but Tara Kain, who is behind the website along with her husband, explains that it is a great opportunity to spend some quality time with a pet.
'A lot of times, people travel with their dogs because they don't see the dog often enough during the time they are working,' she said.
Statistics from the Travel Industry Association of America show that over 29m American tourists have taken their pet on holiday with them in the last three years.
