Sledding - German style
05 February 2007
Many people will be taking to the slopes in the coming months for a spot of skiing, but for those who have had enough of falling over on the piste it may be worth paying a visit to Neudorf.
The German town in the Ore Mountains comes together once a year for the Arschleder Sledding World Championship.
The event involves hundreds of people sliding down a ski slope, using only leather over-britches for protection.
As with many bizarre events around the world, the Arschleder Championship has its roots in tradition.
It is said that in the Middle Ages miners used to straddle tree trunks and slide down the slope to work.
The practice was designed to protect their work trousers but has now been turned on its head to provide fun for locals and tourists alike.
This year's event takes place on 18 February and those taking part are competing to be the winner of the Arschleder-Wettruscheln (competitive Arschleder Sledding).
