Ski Championships in Sweden
05 February 2007
Travellers taking a ski holiday in Are, Sweden, will be able to witness the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships this February.
The resort is the site for the beginning of the championships, which bring together the world's greatest skiers.
A total of 446 athletes will be taking part in the event, with 62 countries having sent representatives.
An official opening ceremony took place in Are Town Square on 2 February, with top officials from Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS) present.
'We are very pleased to see these championships begin after six years of meticulous planning and preparation by the experienced organisers, the Swedish Ski Association,' said FIS president Gian Franco Kasper.
'After a challenging early winter, we are happy to have more than enough snow here in Are and given the excellent course preparation, have no fear about the weather.'
The World Ski Championships attract thousands of visitors every year and the pure spectacle of the event is enough to capture the imagination even of those who do not take a particular interest in professional skiing.
