Airbus A380 date set
07 February 2007
Airbus has revealed that the first commercial flight aboard its new A380 superjumbo will be between Singapore and Sydney.
The giant aircraft will be used by Singapore Airlines (SIA), which hopes the first flight will take place by the end of this year.
The airline has also revealed that this will be followed by regular flights between Singapore and London next year.
'We now expect to launch the first service at end of this year, with the inaugural London service commencing in early 2008,' said SIA general manger of UK and Ireland Marvin Tan.
Plans are being put in place to make all Singapore to London flights by SIA A380-serviced, but the airline admits the timescale is reliant on Airbus getting the aeroplanes built.
However, SIA is confident that flights will begin soon and has been promoting the craft as an environmentally-friendly option.
'Once we convert our three daily London flights to A380s we can offer as many seats as it would take four 747s to provide, while moving to new, cleaner quieter technology,' added Mr Tan.
'Despite its size, the A380 is an environmentally-friendly aircraft with new fuel efficient technology and a noise footprint half that of the Boeing 747.'
