Despite reassurances yesterday (7 February) that the UK's airports would not suffer at the hands of severe weather, heavy snowfall is causing chaos at hubs up and down the country.

A large-scale blizzard has swept across the nation, and continues to do so, leaving up to four inches of snow on the ground.

This has led to massive delays and, in some cases, the complete closure of airport runways.

Heathrow, the UK's largest and busiest hub, remains open but many flights have been cancelled and even more are delayed. Train services to and from the airport are also suffering, with Heathrow Connect running a reduced service of just one train every 90 minutes.

Gatwick was shut for a short time in the early hours of the morning, as were Birmingham, London City, Cardiff and Bristol airports.

These hubs have now been reopened but flight schedules continue to be affected by the earlier problems.

Runways at Luton and Stansted airports remain closed at present. It is unclear when they will reopen but further snow is predicted for the rest of the day.

Travellers are advised to contact their airline or the airport before setting off and should leave themselves plenty of time in which to arrive at the airport as roads and public transport are also feeling the effects of the weather.
