Hong Kong dragon wins Japanese snow sculpture prize
12 February 2007
A team of Hong Kong ice-sculptors have taken first prize at the annual International Snow Sculpture Contest in Sapporo, Japan.
The SAR's winning sculpture, the Dance of the Dragon, was built to symbolise Hong Kong's energy and vitality, as well as its consistently strong economy.
This latest victory is the 12th time Hong Kong has won the championships, part of the Sapporo Snow Festival, since the event began in 1976.
Two workers within Hong Kong's tourism industry were part of the winning team.
Alan Tam Wai-Lun of the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hotel and Hong Kong Disneyland's Thomas Ng Ho-chun joined Wong Wo-pui of the Hong Kong Bankers' Club to make up the SAR team.
The victory comes as Hong Kong sought to promote its tourism industry within the Japanese market, with Miss Hong Kong, Ms Suki Tsui, joining the ice-sculptors to give interviews to members of the local media.
Currently Japan is Hong Kong's third largest source market, with 1.3m Japanese visiting during 2006, an increase of 8.3% on the previous year.
