Chinese mountain painted green
14 February 2007

Tourists paying a visit to Laoshou mountain in south-west China may be surprised to find that it is now greener than ever before.

Authorities decided that the mountainside needed to appear greener but, rather than planting trees and shrubbery, officials have chosen to paint the massive natural structure.

Since August 2006, workers have been in the region armed with spray cans and dark green paint, reports the Xinhua News Agency.

Local residents have no idea why the work is being carried out and have been left guessing as to what the theory is behind it.

Some say that it is part of a drive to appear more environmentally conscious, while others believe that it may be an attempt to improve the region's feng shui.

It is estimated that the work is costing around £31,000, although the local council has refused to comment and has merely stated that the work is the result of 'an order from above'.
