London City airport closed
20 February 2007

A runway at London City airport was closed today (20 February) after a plane's tyres burst upon landing.

Officials at the airport have confirmed that a flight managed to safely land despite its tyres bursting when it hit the ground at 08:35 GMT.

All passengers and crew were removed from the plane without injury, but an investigation is ongoing and the runway was closed for the entire morning.

'As a result of an incident at London City airport this morning, the runway is currently closed,' a midday statement from the airport read.

'We recommend all passengers travelling via London City airport today to contact their airlines directly for further travel information.'

Disruption is likely to be widely felt, as the airport attempts to catch up with its original flight schedule.

The scare comes at a time when the UK's airports are on high alert and have been through a torrid period with many closures in recent months as a result of severe weather.

Airport officials have moved to reassure passengers that today's incident was a minor one.
