22 February 2007
Plans have been put in place for a female-only island in the north-west of Iran.
Officials hope that the island will boost tourism in the region in light of the strict Islamic laws the country lives by, reports the Tehran-e Emrouz.
Men and woman are not allowed to mix together in public with sex segregation laws said to be in place to protect women.
Now officials have revealed that an island on the Urumiyeh lake in Western Azerbaijan province will be strictly women-only.
Once on the island, female visitors will be able to remove their headscarves and don swimming costumes.
At present, swimming costumes can only be worn in specially designated areas of public beaches which are reserved solely for the use of women.
'There will be no men on the Arezou island. Public transport, restaurants and other facilities will be staffed only by women,' a local official, named only as Aghai told the newspaper.
