See in the spring in Alsace
26 February 2007

People considering taking a holiday in Alsace, France, between March and April may want to practice doing things backwards before setting off.

That is no slight on the people of Alsace but between 17 March and 1 April everything gets a little topsy-turvy in the idyllic region.

Apres l'Hiver L'Envers takes place, with the name translating literally as After the Winter Back.

People come from far and wide to celebrate the passing of winter and the beginning of spring with wild parties and colourful festivals.

The highlight of the celebrations happens on 1 April when the entire population of Alsace lives the day in reverse.

It begins with hot chocolate in the morning, followed by dinner later in the day. Of course this meal is eaten in reverse, starting with coffee, followed by desert, then the main and finally the appetiser.

The day comes to an end with the people of Alsace eating breakfast in the evening.
