Chilean town sells out of aphrodisiac
28 February 2007
A picturesque port town in Chile is trying desperately to restock its supplies of a locally-produced aphrodisiac after tourists used it all up.
Valparaiso is famous for its herbal stimulant called palwen, which is created by the town's Mapuche inhabitants and is also known as Mapuche Viagra.
However, the shelves of pharmacies in Valparaiso have been left bare after the world-famous Vina Del Mar song festival took place in the idyllic region, reports website Alfa Chile.
Thousands of musicians and tourists descended on the town for the event and it seems that many of them decided to spice things up with some palwen.
'The Mapuche Viagra increases the desire, the libido and the sexual appetites of men and women,' Italo Diaz, a pharmacist in the region, told Reuters. 'The compound is a Mapuche secret.'
Many tourists will have found the price of the aphrodisiac just too low to refuse, with pharmacies selling palwen for as little as 2,000 pesos (£1.89).
