Magnet bottom causes airport scare
08 March 2007
An airline passenger caused a scare at a US airport when he was found to have a magnet wrapped in wires concealed in his bottom.
Security guards held the man while a bomb squad was called to Los Angeles airport as officials feared a full-scale security breach.
Fadhel al-Maliki was searched by officers who discovered a number of objects which he had hidden in his rectum.
Officers described what was found as a magnet wrapped in a napkin and wires, chewing gum and a polished stone.
It was soon decided that Mr al-Maliki was not a threat to security but he was held by immigration officials for questioning.
'He was secreting these items in a body cavity and that was a great concern because there were also some electric wires associated with that body cavity,' said Larry Fetters, security director at LA airport.
It is still not known why Mr al-Maliki hid the objects where he did.
