Vietnam challenges climbers
09 March 2007

Holidaymakers with an adventurous spirit are being invited to take part in a travel festival contest in Vietnam.

Contestants will be climbing Indochina's highest peak, with officials claiming that around 200 people, Vietnamese and foreign, have already signed up, reports Thanh Nien.

The climb is due to take place in April and that is said to be the best time to scale the huge structure.

Chairman of Nguyen Huu Van province, where Indochina is situated, said that the 3,143-metre peak is at its best between September and April as its flowers are in bloom.

The idea behind the climb is to promote a festival called Sapa in the Clouds, which focuses on tourism in the region.

Sapa is a picturesque village in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range close to China.

It offers some of the greatest scenery in Vietnam and is home to a number of small tribes, traditional villages and rice terraces.
