OZ outback's rivers flow
13 March 2007

Holidaymakers are flocking to the Australian outback to see a rather rare sight.

Lakes and rivers in the region are currently in full flood, providing a completely different experience for anyone who has ever ventured there before.

People are keen to catch a glimpse of the water as it passes through a region which has been dry for years on end.

'There was about an eight-foot carpet python in a dead coolabah about 40 feet up, and it was latched on to the top branch with its tail hanging down,' Rex Ellis, South Australian Bush Safari Company spokesman told ABC News following a visit.

'It had a white faced heron, had a couple of coils wrapped around it and it was hanging down, pecking at it, flapping its wings and carrying on.

'We pulled in and got some really good film of it and then all of a sudden the heron got away and so it was probably a pretty good result - except for the snake,' he added.

Mr Ellis, like many visitors, took advantage of the high water levels to take a boat trip down the Diamantina River.
