Bangalore's new airport nearing completion
13 March 2007

The new international airport in Bangalore is to officially open on 2 April 2008.

A statement from the minister of civil aviation in India detailed plans to open next year and put forward suggestions for a name.

Shri Patel told parliament that the state government of Karnataka had suggested that the hub be called Bangalore International airport.

Mr Patel highlighted the fact that this would make it instantly recognisable and would help to promote Bangalore as a destination among foreign visitors.

Infrastructure surrounding the airport is said to be nearing completion, with a number of railway and road link already in place.

The current airport that serves Bangalore, which is owned by the HAL ministry of defence, will close to commercial flights once the new hub is opened.

Bangalore is known as the Garden City because of its greenery and large number of famous public parks.
