Philip Green to fly friends to Maldives for birthday bash
15 March 2007
The owner of the Arcadia group, which includes high street store Top Shop, is throwing a lavish party for his 55th birthday.
Sir Phillip Green has reportedly told 100 of his friends to turn up at Stansted airport on a given day and they will be whisked off to unknown location.
It has been suggested that the billionaire tycoon is planning a bash in an exclusive Maldives resort on the private Indian Ocean island of Soneva Fushi.
The party is expected to take place over five days, with celebrity guests including Kate Moss, Simon Cowell and Eddie Jordan.
Sir Phillip is also thought to have booked the services of George Michael and Ricky Martin to provide the entertainment.
In previous years the tycoon has taken his pals abroad to see in his birthday, with his 50th being marked with 200 guests in Cyprus.
On that occasion the entertainment was provided by Rod Stewart and Tom Jones.
'Philip Green's a very hard businessman but he also likes to have a good party,' said Richard Hyman, managing director of market research group Verdict.
'It does seem lavish, but when you've got £5 billion, in the context of his wealth, it's not really out of kilter.'
