Thousands gather on Sydney Harbour Bridge
19 March 2007

Sydney Harbour Bridge was brought to a standstill on 19 March as the structure's 75th anniversary was celebrated.

An estimated 50,000 people turned up to march across the bridge which has been a prominent feature in Sydney since it opened in 1932.

Joining the celebrations was Ray Cumdey who first walked across the bridge on the day it was opened.

Mr Cumdey was just four years old at the time and was helped across by his family this time around aged 79.

New South Wales governor Marie Bashir marked the beginning of the celebrations with a ceremonial cutting of a ribbon, using the same scissors prime minister Jack Lang had used in 1932.

Those who turned out at the event were treated to a flyover, with five yellow tiger moth bi-planes passing the bridge. This was followed by a helicopter flyover.

Crowds of people enjoyed a fantastic day in Sydney's history and had the freedom of the bridge which was closed to traffic.
