Airbus A380 debuts in US
20 March 2007
The biggest commercial aeroplane in the world has landed in the US for the first time.
Airbus' double-decker A380 has landed in New York and Los Angeles, with Lufthansa and Qantas testing the airports to see if they can easily handle a number of the flights landing there every day.
Lufthansa is leading the way in Europe in terms of how many of the A380s it has ordered, with the airline apparently planning on making the craft its flagship plane.
Qantas hopes to have the A380 in the air with passengers on it in 2008 and marked its landing in Los Angeles as a big milestone for the airline.
'The A380 generates incredible levels of interest wherever it goes,' said Executive General Manager of Qantas, Mr John Borghetti.
'Qantas has worked with Airbus, the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles World Airports to make the aircraft's visit to the US west coast a reality.
'As well as being involved in ceremonial activities, the aircraft participated in valuable airport compatibility trials,' he added.
The A380 has a wingspan of 262 feet, a fuselage of 239 feet and stands 80 feet from the ground.
